A coveted Bing & Bing building
By Johanna Mårdh

New York

2 Horatio Street, a coveted Bing & Bing building of 17 floors, is centrally located at the intersection of Greenwich Avenue and Horatio Street and is only a short walk from the 1, 2 and 3 subway.

Despite the recent renovation of the lobby, hallways and the majority of the 242 co-op units, this building has kept its pre-war details from the time it was built in 1931, such as large windows, beamed ceilings and comely wood floors.

Imagine looking out from your north facing window, listening to the crackling of your wood burning fireplace as the snow falls on the charming Jackson Square Park right outside, and ordering hot chocolate from one of the local cafés.

A full time doorman, porter, bike room and laundry facility are some of the conveniences of this pet- and celebrity friendly building.

22 Perry Street

A Farytale Tower
By Johanna Mårdh

New York

The unique appearance of 22 Perry Street, a small architectural castle, has a curved end which provides glazed angular balconies illuminating each apartment with sunlight.

The architecture of this building with its conical top, constructed at the intersection of Perry Street and 7th Avenue, was inspired by the great Victorian clock tower of the Jefferson Market Courthouse Library, which one can find just a few blocks away.

The mixed use building has five floors with 21 condominiums and several spacious commercial units.

Living here one can walk to a variety of many different restaurants, such as Morandi which serves Italian cuisine, or the Empire Szechuan Village which offers delicious selections in both Japanese and Chinese cuisine. For those who love sandwiches there is a Subway Restaurant, the famous sandwich chain, housed in the first floor of this fairytale tower.

Subway Doors in Penthouse

By MAYA POPE-CHAPPELL

Architect Adam Kushner calls his West Village co-op a "laboratory for experimentation." The two-story penthouse, which was renovated to combine two apartments, brings aspects of city's infrastructure into the home.
"This space is a physical entrance and a visual exit into and out of the city," said Mr. Kushner, a native New Yorker.

Subway doors purchased from the MTA and white subway tiles on the floor mark the home's entryway.
The walls include stone from Manhattan's bedrock.

The heart of the apartment incorporates earth, water, air and fire into the design. There's a waterfall near the entryway surrounded by Mexican beach stones. Wood beams, used to signify earth, were taken from the roof during the renovation and repurposed for floors and walls on the first level. A Wolf cooktop and Miele oven showcase fire.

The white-accented upper level, which holds an office, master bedroom and glass-encased shower with a glass-bottom tub that looks down into the kitchen, is designed to represent air. "It's meant to be a white, clear space like a cloud," said Mr. Kushner of the upper level, which also has a closet with subway doors.

Mr. Kushner began renovations in 2001, and completed them in 2005, just as he and his wife, Louise Chuu, welcomed twins.
